Ahead of the 50-year anniversary of ABBA’s 1974 Eurovision triumph with ‘Waterloo’ in Brighton, ABBA The Museum commissioned the Swedish illustrator Andreas Bennwik to create a series of images based on the song’s music video:
“It represents ABBA at that particular time while also being quite timeless, with their brightly coloured outfits against a neutral white background. I wanted to create an illustration that feels hand-painted and contemporary, without being kitsch,’ he explained”.

The ABBA Waterloo Velour Collection is inspired by the stage costumes worn by Agnetha and Frida in Brighton in 1974.
The original Waterloo stage costumes came to life when Frida went shopping one day and visited one of Stockholm’s trendiest fashion boutiques at the time. There, she discovered a stylish jacket adorned with chains and sequins, designed by the boutique owner, Inger Svenneke.
Consequently, Inger was commissioned to design ABBA’s Waterloo costumes using the jacket as a prototype for their new look. With the Waterloo Velour Collection, we wanted to honor the original styles through color and subtle details, while at the same time creating wearable pieces that fit with today’s lifestyle.

My, my! Fifty years after ABBA’s international breakthrough with Waterloo in the Eurovision Song Contest, Polar Music International celebrates this milestone event in the history of one of the world’s best-loved pop groups. When Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad entered the already colourful stage at The Dome in Brighton, England on 6 April 1974, dressed in shiny glam-rock costumes typical of the era, the world of pop changed forever.
The Waterloo album is now reissued as a Half-Speed mastered 45rpm black double vinyl album, along with a limited edition box set of the three vinyl singles originally released by Polar in 1974; the singles are also available as separate picture discs. To top it all off, there is a unique 10-inch vinyl disc featuring ABBA’s Eurovision winner in the four different languages recorded by the group back in the day.
Waterloo, ABBA’s second album, was first released in Sweden in March 1974. It was an enormous success: up to that point, no other album had sold as many copies in the group’s home country. And no wonder, as Björn and Benny had written, arranged and produced a string of great songs, most of them graced by the compelling lead vocals of Agnetha and Frida. The Waterloo album offers many riches beyond the title track. There is the breezy Honey, Honey, a highly familiar tune in the 21st century through its inclusion in the Mamma Mia! musical; Hasta Mañana, a tear-drenched ballad that almost became ABBA’s Eurovision entry; the early 1960s pop of Dance (While The Music Still Goes On) – and much more.
