On 6 April 1974, twenty-four jurors made Waterloo the winner of Eurovision. On 31 January 1976, British record buyers made Mamma Mia number one without any contest telling them to do so. The distance between those two results contains the real story of ABBA’s breakthrough: Eurovision opened the international door, but the music recorded after Brighton determined how long they would remain beyond it.
