ABBA Down Under ’76 50th Anniversary

Abbamania Australia Collectors Souvenir

Nicholas Faltskog

1976 started with ABBA having already scored 3 No. 1 singles and 2 No. 1 albums in the previous year.

They were riding high on success and in March they made their first visit to Australia to promote and record a TV special for Bandstand. At the same time, they released their new single ‘Fernando’, which stayed at No. 1 for 14 weeks. The TV special was watched by more Australian viewers than the historic Moon Landing!

They had announced a concert tour of Australia for March the following year, and tickets sold out the moment they went on sale.

Their deal with Reg Grundy saw official ABBA merchandise hit the shops and sell out week in, week out. By the end of the year, they had scored two more No. 1 singles with ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Money, Money, Money’ and another No. 1 album with ‘Arrival’.

Australia had never seen anything like the success ABBA had; 1976 was simply the year ABBA ruled the charts and hearts in Australia!
